SWOPT at Pint of Science 2026: Bringing Photoswitching to the Public
SWOPT was proud to take part in this year’s Pint of Science Germany, thanks to Huma Khatoon, the PhD candidate working at Helmholtz, who actively contributes to the SWOPT project by developing photoswitching agents.
Presenting to a sold-out audience, Huma delivered an inspiring and accessible talk at Alte Utting in Munich. She introduced the concept of engineering proteins as photoswitchable sensors, molecules that can be turned on and off with light. This cutting-edge research lies at the heart of the SWOPT project, enabling the imaging of structures and processes deep within living tissue.
In a relaxed and lively atmosphere, she also shared insights into her daily life as a researcher, making science approachable for a diverse audience. The engaging discussion that followed highlighted the value of open, two-way science communication.
We extend our sincere thanks to Huma for representing SWOPT, to the enthusiastic audience, and to the Pint of Science Germany team for making this event possible. As a publicly funded project, we are committed to bringing science closer to society. And this event was a perfect example of that mission in action.
